Skilled occupations such as engineers, taxation accountants, barristers and solicitors are at risk of being removed from Australia’s 2016/17 skilled occupations lists (SOL), following advice from the Department of Education and Training to the Minister of Immigration and Border Protection.

The SOL is a compilation of occupations for skilled migration with the aim of meeting the medium to long-term skill needs of the Australian economy and is commonly used for non employer sponsored work visas such as the 189 or 489, rather than 457 work visas.

Each year, the Department of Education and Training undertakes a review of the SOL and if there is emerging evidence of excess supply in the labour market for a particular occupation, it is generally flagged for possible removal.

The Department of Education and Training receives submissions from bodies and organisations across the country to assess labour market conditions for the listed occupations. The Australian newspaper recently reported that GP’s, surgeons, anesthetists and other occupations in the health industry are among 41 jobs pushed by the Federal Health Department for removal from the SOL.

The Health Department submission into the review of the SOL read, “Over a longer planning horizon, better management of migration pathways for international health professionals must occur in combination with all commonwealth departments’. The strategy would allow vacancies to be filled by local medical graduates, particularly in regional areas.

The Department of Immigration & Border Protection (DIBP) has announced the New Skilled Occupation List (SOL) for subclass 485, 189 and 489 (family sponsored) visa applications.

They have also released the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) which is used for subclass 457, 186 and 190 applications.

The following occupations have been removed from the SOL - Petroleum and Mining Engineer, Metallurgist, Mining Engineer, Dental Hygienist, Dental Prosthetist, Dental Technician, Dental Therapist, Environmental Health Officer, Occupation Health and Safety Advisor.

The occupations of Orthotist or Prosthetist and Audiologist have been added to the SOL.

What is the difference between the SOL and the CSOL?

Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

The current Skilled Occupation List (SOL) is relevant for applicants for:
  • independent points-based skilled migration who are not nominated by a state or territory government agency (such as the subclass 189 visa);
  • Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) - Graduate Work stream.
Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL)

Whereas whe current Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) is relevant for applicants for:
  • points-based skilled migration who are nominated by a state or territory government agency under a State Migration Plan
  • the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS), who must have been nominated by an Australian employer to fill a position in an occupation that appears in the CSOL (such as the subclass 186 and 187 visa)
  • the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457)
  • the Training and Research visa (subclass 402).

Three new occupations to be added to the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) - chef, tiler, bricklayer

Chefs, tilers and bricklayers will be added the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) on 1 July 2014, Senators Michaelia Cash and Andrew Robb have announced. Nurses - Australia needs you

Sitting high up on the Australian Skilled Occupation List (SOL), nursing is high in demand across Australia.

With Registered Nurse positions needed in the fields of Mental Health, Surgical, Paediatric, Child and Family Health, Community Health, Critical Care and Emergency and Disability and Rehabilitation, there are many more fields that are in demand in Australia.

Nursing salaries in Australia generally sit between $AUD75,000 – $AUD85,000 – (higher than the UK average salary within the nursing field). Throughout the medical field there is also a high demand for surgeons, as well as Neurosurgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Urologists, Dermatologists, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

With jobs available throughout the medical field in Australia, you could be on your way to securing a permanent Australian visa and a whole new lifestyle.
